Welcome to the Museum of Natural History Chemnitz!

Since August 2004 the Museum is located in an important central building named TIETZ. The building has been constructed by H&C Tietz in 1912/13 following the French neoclassical style. The historic shopping center hosts now the biggest civic collection and together with the arrangement of the 290 million years old Petrified Forest also one of the heaviest fossil complex.

A hidden treasure in the underground of Chemnitz

Once about 290 million years ago the area of Chemnitz was located within a marvellous tropical rain forest. The equator was just around the corner. Warm humid climate was present. Amazing plants grew up into the sky. Suddenly - a loud rumble. God volcano sent glowing hot volcanic clouds over the land - the end for all living creatures in this area. They were buried underneath a thick layer of volcanic ash. Unbelievably but true: transformed to stone the organisms like trees remained cell by cell. This petrified wood in the underground is the treasure we are looking for.

The Museum runs programms of activities for school groups, families and adults. Explore the activities happening now and in teh near future.
